FRIENDS OF THE RE MUSEUM (FoREM) TOUR 11 - 15 JULY 2009
The traditional annual FoREM Tour for 2009 is to be a short five day coach tour to Picardy. Leger, the Battlefield Tour specialist, is being used for the third year running. Travel will be by luxury coach which will leave Colchester at 0800hrs and will, if there are passengers to pick up, call at Maidstone and Chatham. Passengers may also join the coach at Passenger Services Dover Harbour. The tour is based in the beautiful town of Ypres and we will be staying in the three star hotel Novotel Ypres Centrum close to the town square and the Menin Gate. Bill Mc Quade who took us around Northern Europe in 2007 will be our guide. The inclusive cost is £499.00 per person. This includes all transport costs and entrance fees, half board at the hotel and a Gala Farewell Dinner on the last evening. The aim is, as usual, to combine military history with fun and you will be travelling in good company. You are free to take any day off from the arranged visits if you wish.
We will be calling at Poperinghe on Day I on the way to Ypres to visit Talbot House ( Toch H) and the Execution Yard.
Day 2 takes us to Sanctuary Wood, Tyne Cot, Messines Ridge, Ploegsteert Memorial-where three Sapper VC's are commemorated and Hellfire Corner. In the evening we attend the Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate.
Day 3 is a day devoted to tunnels and trenches and includes a visit to the newly opened tunnels at Wellington Quarries at Arras and finishes at Vimy Ridge.
Day 4 takes us to the haunting Somme battlefield. La Boiselle, Thiepval, Newfoundland Park and Serre. Gala Dinner in the evening.
Day 5 in the morning Cloth Hall, Menin Gate and Vauban fortifications in Ypres calling in to St Omer on the way to Calais to see Vauban fortifications and have a late lunch. Fleeting visit to the V2 Bunker at Watten. ETA Colchester 2100hrs
